Damn It!

Just got home from the stupid ankle doctor. He says my ankle is healing fine on the outside part of the bone, but he wants to see more healing on the inside before he turns me loose without my brace. So I have to wear this stupid thing for another MONTH! Even worse, it just started squeaking today (the brace, not my ankle).

I don't know why my x-ray turned out pink, but it did. This is the worst print out yet, but Greg kindly drew an arrow to the break. So if you can get past the flamingo pink, check it out:

The Universe Hates Me

Oh. My. God.

What did I do to piss off the entire universe? I swear this has been such a week of confusion and mix ups. To wit:

o Last Friday I had on my calendar that I had a hair appointment at 4:30. Traffic was extra horrible and I didn’t get there until 4:50. I couldn’t find my hairdresser’s phone number to tell her I was on my way and when I got there she wasn’t there. That’s very unlike her and I was really annoyed until she called me back to tell me my appointment is for THIS Friday. No wonder she wasn’t there! Duh.
o Yesterday I had on my calendar that I had an appointment with the orthopedic doctor for an ankle check. I left work early and got there on time, only to find out my appointment was for TODAY.
o This morning I stopped to get gas and managed to lock my keys in the car. And my keypad entry thingy doesn’t work. Through my auto insurance I have road side assistance that would allow me to call someone to come and unlock it. All that information, of course, was IN THE CAR WITH MY KEYS. And by the way, “Alohomora” and “Accio Kris’s keys” don’t actually work in the Muggle world. I tried it.

Here’s hoping September doesn’t go as badly as August.

What?

I'm going to get you, Cleo!

I'm so cute.

Worn out.

How Cleo really feels about Zinger.

Books = Love

Every now and then I read some horrifying article that talks about how little the American public reads. Here is another one. I just can't help sharing these.

Do you think it is really true that the typical person only reads four books a year? I can't believe that 27% of the people polled have not read a book this year. How sad is that?

On the other hand, that lady from Florida that reads 70 books a year is obviously an amateur. I read 150 books or so a year. Why didn't they poll me?!

And yes, I mostly read fiction. I like fiction. I'm not going to pretend I don't or apologize for it. So there.

Why are you all reading my blog? Go read a book!! (I can recommend some good ones if you want.)

The News

Did you all see the eclipse yesterday? I forgot it was happening, but woke up at 4:00, thanks to Zinger tap-dancing on my head. I looked out the window at the moon, saw that it was partially covered and thought, “Hmm, didn’t we just have a full moon the other night? How can so little be showing now?” It took several hours before I remembered that we had an eclipse. Dang it! I would have watched more if I had remembered. The moon was huge and orange when I came to work.

I checked CNN for info on the eclipse and could only find stories about some stupid senator making lewd gestures in an airport bathroom (honestly, how desperate do you have to be to try and pick someone up in an airport bathroom? How pathetic.). Oh, and stories about whether or not Owen Wilson tried to kill himself. Guess that shows you what our society deems “news.”

Actually, I don’t really know why I bother to read the news. It’s getting weirder and weirder every day. Although I did read where Leona Helmsley left her dog twelve million dollars. TWELVE MILL-EEON DOLLARS (said in a Dr. Evil voice)! To a dog. A DOG! I love my dogs to death and would certainly provide for their care should I pre-decease them, but I’m pretty sure $12 million is a bit much. What is her dog going to spend the money on, for heaven’s sake?? You can only buy and eat so many Greenies. Her chauffer only got $100,000. Two of her grandkids got nothing. Is this screwed up or what?

Oh, and while we are talking about weird news, did you see that some cities are considering legislation that will allow them to ban those God-awful saggy pants? I say go for it! I don’t know what kind of fashion statement that is supposed to make, but those saggy baggy pants are a “fashion don’t” in my book. I always want to go up to people that wear them and give the pants a good yank, just to see if they would notice. Give me a nice snug pair of Levi’s on a guy any day. What do girls of today see in that look? Yeesh.

The End of the Challenge

I was reminded by Ritha on Friday that I have not updated my blog in far too long. Like you should talk, little Miss-I-haven’t-updated-my-blog-since-August 13th! Hopefully she included the other City of Gresham bloggers in this reprimand. Especially since Char hasn’t updated hers since July 22, Michele since July 30, Christine since August 18, and Diane since August 19. Hmm, guess we need to get another scrap challenge going to have something to post.

Speaking of the challenge, did I ever post the results? I don’t think so, so here you go…

Christine, the overachiever of the group, was the only one of us to actually complete the goal of 25 pages by the end of July.
Michele was a close second with 22 pages.
Ritha had a slow start but kicked it in to gear at the end of July and ended up with 21 pages.
Diane, who wasn’t part of the original challenge group, but who jumped in at the last minute, ended up with 13.
Charlene and I brought up the end with a resounding 8 pages each.

Way to go ladies! You are all awesome! I am inspired by your skills every time I look at your blogs.

I really should have been able to produce more than 8. Sheesh, I was down with a broken ankle half the time. You’d think I could have managed to put together a couple more pages than that! And here’s what’s even more sad…I haven’t done a single page since then! I’ve got to put in some serious scrapping time soon.

All in all some beautiful pages were produced. If you’d like to see them, please explore the links under the “Friend Blogs” section. I hope we do another challenge soon. What say you, ladies?? Something we can work on at our next Scrap Retreat in November?

New Xray

I forgot to post my x-ray from 8-14. You can still see the break but my doctor assures me it is "filling in." Got to love those techincal terms!

This is a scan of a print-out so the image is pretty crappy. I can't blow it up any farther without pixilating the picture beyond recognition.

Sleepy Kitten Pictures

I'm It!

Deb tagged me to share 10 things on my mind, so here goes....

1. Why are the trees already starting to turn colors? I know we've had a cooler than normal summer, but it is only AUGUST here, Mother Nature. We should have another full month before the trees start to change. The tree at work by the handicapped spot I've been using is actually loosing leaves already. This is just wrong.

2. Did I tell you my current cast is removeable? Do you know how awesome that is?

3. I've very grateful that gas prices are slowing coming down from the absolutely redicoulus to the merely laughable level. Of course, with Hurricane Dean coming at us, I'm sure the prices will shoot right back up again. In the mean time, I'll enjoy not spending $75 every week to fill up my car.

4. Computers drive me up the wall. I've been having this problem for the past couple of months with mine being slow. I've been trying to fix it but haven't had any luck. Thursday night I decided to do a full back up of my system on my external hard drive for the first time. When I got home Friday after work it was STILL downloading. Yeah, I ended up with about 8 backups. Did you know that the computer will refuse to delete something if the path name is too long? Trust me, it does.

5. Netflix actually LOWERED their prices. How wild is that? I love it!

6. Comcast sucks the big blue one. We've been getting these notices for a year that we have to switch our phone over to the new digital service because they are doing away with the service we did have. The digital service has been hyped up as so great, and they said they'd give us a deal because we've been Comcast internet, cable & phone customers for a long time (can you say monopoly??). So they came out last week and did whatever mysterious thing Comcast technitions do. We didn't use to have any fancy stuff like caller ID, voice mail or any goodies like that. And I liked it that way. So now we are paying more for this service they made us get and we have terrible scratchy buzzing connections. Comcast tells us it must be inside the house and it isn't their problem. Um, didn't have that problem with the old service. Stay tuned. I have a feeling I will be complaining about this a lot more in the future. We do get every cable channel on the earth now, but I still can't find anything to watch.

7. Zinger now weighs 3.3 pounds. He's growing so fast! I took him to the vet this week for his second series of kitten shots. He was such a good boy. He didn't fight or squirm or anything. He just let them do what they needed to do for him.

8. Poor Greg has been so miserable this week. Tuesday he got a lumbar epidural steriod injection. The doctor hit a nerve on his left side and his leg is still numb. The poor man is just miserable. The doctor said that the back would get worse before it got better. Well the worse part is coming true. Keep your fingers crossed that it will move on to getting better soon.

9. I really miss letterboxing. I can't wait until I can get out there and box again!

10. Carmen & Sophie are bored. I need to get them out and playing tomorrow.

Okay, so this isn't the world's most exciting blog ever, but I lived up to Deb's challenge. Let's hear from all of you!

Introducing....

Zingiber!

The genus Zingiber contains the true gingers, a set of plants with medicinal and culinary value in many parts of the world. The most well-known is Z. officinale, garden ginger.

Zingiber

Zingiber officinale rhizome
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Plantae

Division: Magnoliophyta

Class: Liliopsida

Order: Zingiberales

Family: Zingiberaceae

Genus: Zingiber

Species
Zingiber officinale
Zingiber spectabilis
Zingiber petiolatum
Zingiber zerumbet
Zingiber purpureum
Zingiber mioga
Zingiber malaysianum

Greg thinks it is a dumb name, but he wanted to call him Coco but coming up with a dippy name like that negates your right to have a vote. Sorry, sweetie! I'm calling him Zinger for short.

I finally got some pictures of him not moving. Of course I found out after I downloaded the pictures that someone put a noseprint on the lense, so that's why they look all blurry in the middle. I've got to take a photography class!

FREE!!!!!

I'm FREE! No more cast! Yay! It's so exciting.

So here's what my leg looked like when the cast came off:

I have a different soft cast that I can TAKE OFF (!!!!).

I have to wear this one for three more weeks and then I should be completely free.

I had the best shower today. It was so nice to be able to stand under the spray and clean EVERYTHING!

I know, I'm a little over enthusiastic about this, but it has been 8 weeks since I've been able to have a real shower. You try going that long without being able to shower and tell me how you feel!

Poor Carmen

Is anyone wondering about this picture I posted a few days ago?

Poor Carmen. She was attacked at the dog park on Friday, August 3rd. Some stupid lady not only wasn't watching her dog she was on the other side of the park when it happened.. She said her dog was "just playing", but you don't normally see blood and muscles when it's playing.

Greg had to scoop Carmen up, hoof it 1/4 mile back up the hill to the car and rush her to the ER. The vets had to put her out to clean the wound and stitch it back up. She got 5 pretty purple outside stitches and numerous ones inside.

She's doing just fine now. She pulled all the stitches out last week, but the wound is healing nicely as you can see in this picture:

We are trying to keep her from running all over the place chasing her ball or frisbee. This has never been easy for Carmen, so she is currently pouting. Poor baby! We are just lucky the injury wasn't worse.

Here's the thing I don't understand. The stupid owner didn't offer to pay for the vet bill (which was $400 when all was said and done). Can you believe that? Greg has even been back to the park a couple of times with Sophie to see if he could find this dimwit. No luck. So once again we are paying for an injury someone else's dog did. I'm really getting tired of this. And don't tell me we should stop going to the park. The girls love it so much and we do try to stay away from other dogs. Sigh. Is having kids this hard??

A Really Bad Picture Poser

I want to post more kitten pictures, but he's so danged active that it's hard to get him to hold still long enough to get a picture of him. Just to show you what I'm up against, here is a series of pictures I took tonight:

Yeah, he was framed in the picture each time I went to take it. I can't get a single decent picture of this little beast now. If I do manage to catch him in the frame, it turns out blurry. Hopefully I'll learn to be a better photographer before he grown up!

The Story

I have had several requests on the “how I got the kitten” story. I was waiting for two of my co-workers to be guest bloggers and tell the story, but they maintain that they are too busy with WORK stuff to be able to tell the tale in their own words, so I’ll have to do it for them.

On 7/25 Ritha & Christine were heading in to the building from the parking lot after lunch when they encountered Michelle from CEDD trying to lure a kitten out of the bushes. She heard it meowing and they helped her to catch it. Apparently it was quite a show. Somehow in the fracas, Michelle got bitten and the kitten finally got caught.

Ritha & Christine brought the kitten up here to accounting and turned him over to Michele (our resident cat lover who lives the closest) who took him home for safekeeping until she could get him to the shelter that evening. I was covering the front desk that day and missed out on all the fun until it was all over.

I have been thinking about getting a kitten off and on for some time. I went out to the shelter in December and have half-heartedly been looking at kitties ever since. When I heard about this little guy, my interest was peaked. Michele agreed to keep him at home another night and I talked to Greg. Greg didn’t actually say “yes” to the new kitten, but he didn’t say “no” either.

So Thursday evening I stopped at Michele’s and picked up this itty bitty orange kitten. She let me use one of those cardboard boxes that they give you to carry cats in and he was this tiny little ball of fluff in the bottom of it. He kept sliding around in the box while I was driving, so I just took him out and held him the whole way home. Wouldn’t you know that traffic would be hideous that night, but he was very quiet and well behaved and just let me hold him.

I tried to get him an appointment to see my feline vet, but they didn’t have anything available, so I took him to the 24-hour vet we use for emergency stuff. I didn’t want to bring him into the house if he had something that could make my kids sick.

He was very good at the vet. He was either scared to death or totally laid back. He just let me hold him or laid on the towel the vet put down on the counter for him. He was poked and prodded, weighed, and petted. He weighed 1.9 pounds. He purred when the vet tech listened to his heart. He didn’t so much as wiggle as she checked him over. They took him to the back to take some blood and give him his vaccines. The vets decided he was a healthy male kitten about 6-8 weeks old. Feline Leukemia and AIDs tests came back negative. They wormed him and cleaned his ears. He had ear mites so his ears were icky.

I brought him home and we set up one of the big dog crates for him to hang out in. A disposable brownie pan served as a cat box, and Greg smooshed up some of Cleo’s cat food for him. I put it in the little dish that hooks on the crate door. A soft blankie and he was all set. I held him for a bit and handed him to Greg. Greg put him on the floor and he promptly went and hid under the big cabinet thingy we have. Naturally it is the only place in the room that we couldn’t reach him. Eventually, though, I got him out and snuggled him in his little room.

The next day I brought him out before I went to work and he was really lethargic. He didn’t run or jump or play or do any of the cute things kittens normally do. I was starting to get worried that there was something wrong with him. He liked being held and purred up a storm, so I hoped he was just overwhelmed by his good fortune.

Greg sent me an email later saying that when he went to check on the kitty he noticed the food hadn’t been touched. He put a couple pieces of kibble on his hand and offered it to him and they were vacuumed right up. I guess he didn’t realize the food had been there all along on the door.

That evening he was all perked up. No more passive kitty! And from then on he hasn't stopped playing long enough to look back.

So this little orange guy has won the kitty lottery. I think we've done pretty well in choosing him. He's a little ball of fire these days. Full of kitten mischief and learning how to be the boss of the house. The dogs don't bother him in the slightest, except with Sophie snaps at him. He's fascinated with Cleo, who really wants nothing to do with him.

We are very lucky to have him. Now we just need to NAME him!

Kittens Are So Cute

I know I haven't written in a while. I'll get you a nice long post soon and explain this:
