Birthday Card

You guys have got to see this card my friend Marmalade sent to me. Click here and prepare to laugh. Thanks, Marmie-Pie

Oh, Krap

Thanks to Shannon at work I now have a new hobby. Well, to be fair, I guess it really is a variation on a relatively newer hobby...knitting. She introduced me to the Knifty Knitter. Have you seen this? Deb, you might want to pay attention. This is the easiest way to knit EVER!

Go to your local Craft Warehouse and for $10-$20 you can get a set of 4 round looms. They look like this:

Each loom is basically a round circle with pegs on it. You are wrapping the yarn on preset pegs and then use a little tool to flip the yarn over to make a stitch. The little tool comes in the kit even. The directions are easy to follow (so far) and I got myself a book to learn more stitches.

I made a little baby hat with it last night....in less than an hour! It is so easy. I took a picture of the hat, but I left my camera downstairs and I want to get to doing some more "knitting", so I'll have to load it later. In the meantime, go to your local craft store and get yourself one! It's fun and easy. There is also a long oval set, but I haven't gone down that path yet.

I learned to knit at our last scrapbooking weekend and haven't managed to finish a single thing yet, although I've started a lot of hats and scarves. I got my looms yesterday and I've already finished a hat! I feel so successfull.

This concludes the (unpaid) advertisement for Knifty Knitters. Is that name just too, too cute or what? I am now off to work on my next hat. Stay tuned for a picture of the baby hat!

Totally Robbed

I was robbed. The idiot Northwest weatherpeople PROMISED that there would be snow today. I was totally looking forward to a nice snow day for my birthday. But noooo! They had to go and be all wrong, as usual. Okay, I know I shouldn't be surprised, but I really did want a snow day. I didn't think that was too much to ask for my birthday.

Speaking of birthdays, a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my dad & Greg, who both celebrated another year on earth on the 27th.

Keep your fingers crossed for snow tonight. I don't mind celebrating my birthday snow day one day late!

Random Acts of Pieness

Here are some tips on how to celebrate National Pie Day on January 23rd.

Share pie. Whether you make or buy pie, share it. By its very nature, pie is meant to be eaten with others.

Pay it forward. Hand out pie slices to strangers and encourage them to do the same for others. It could spread the peace on earth and goodwill to mankind that we all hope for.

Be a good Samaritan. Buy an extra pie at your local grocery store and give it to the person behind you in line. You may just change their life!

Reach out to new neighbors you haven’t met and bring them some pecan pie – it says your thoughtful. Stay awhile to get to know each other over pie and fill them in on the neighborhood.

Indulge your co-workers. Bring some pie to work – you’ll create a lot of good rapport and maybe even get a raise.

Surprise your significant other at work and bring him or her a pie to share with their coworkers.

Say thank you. Know a special someone who deserves some thanks? Maybe it’s a friend who did you a favor, your child’s teacher or your postal worker. What better way to say thanks than with a warm hug wrapped in a delicious crust?

Got a crush? Invite the “apple pie of your eye” for some pie and get to know each other better. But make it chocolate – most Americans believe it’s the most romantic pie. Before long, you may be calling each other “sweetie pie.”

Delight your family. Share the love and share your favorite memories together over a warm, fresh pie. Have older family members talk about the history behind the family favorites. Start a new tradition and publish pie memories and recipes, then send them to family members.

Spend time with your kids and make a pie together. Let them pick their favorite pie and show them how it’s done. They’ll be proud of their creation and have fond memories of you as the best parent ever for years to come!

Get caught up with friends and invite them over for some afternoon pumpkin pie. You can dish on all their latest news.

Throw a pie potluck get-together. Have everyone bring their favorite pie and exchange recipes. We’ve heard of events where more than 100 folks come with 100 pies. Have a contest to see who can come up with the most pie songs. The winning prize? A pie!

Hold a charity pie-throwing or pie-eating contest or a pie auction. You can donate the proceeds to your local community food bank.

Hold a pie-making contest. Invite the best pie makers in town to compete for prizes in various categories. Ask cooking teachers, pastry chefs and pie lovers to be judges. Be sure the kids are involved – you can include pie poetry and pie art contests for them.

Register for the 2008 American Pie Council (APC)/Crisco National Pie Championships

Eat pie. Whether you make it yourself, buy it at a supermarket or bakery or order it at a restaurant, perform a random act of pieness on yourself and enjoy some pie on National Pie Day – it’s great with lunch, dinner or as a late-night snack.

Looks like the Pie Counsel or whatever they are seems to think that pie equals love. Sounds good to me!

Dog Show

Greg and I went to the Rose City Classic Dog Show today. It was amazing. Luckily, I work with a terrific lady that shows her Basenji's who gave me two free passes to the show (a $20 value!). She says she didn't do as well as she wanted except on Saturday when her dog almost won best in breed.

Dog shows are weird. I heard more than one person talk about how political the judging is. I hate that. It should be all about the dog, not all about the persona who owns or is showing the dog.

Unfortunately, we got there too late to see the whippets show, but we did watch the Italian Greyhounds from start to finish. They are so danged cute. I think Greg fell in love with a little red and white girl named Spring who was about 6 months old. Can you just see Greg walking an IG? They'd be so cute together! We also enjoyed the Basenji's and the Pharaoh Hounds. We ran into a really nice couple that we've met at lure trials showing one of their dogs. That was kind of cool and made me want to race again this year.

Anyway, I like going to the dog shows to stroll around the merchant booths and pick up free samples of dog & cat food. We got a lot this time! I also enjoy seeing a whole bunch of the same breed of dog all at once. Especially if it is a breed that is supposed to be one color, unlike whippets who say "color is immaterial." We saw a whole line of Shetland Sheepdogs getting their last minute grooming and fluffing before they went in the ring. That was pretty cool except that they used an awful lot of hairspray on them.

One thing I thought was interesting was that there were no Greyhounds entered in the show. Hmm. I'll have to go research that.

It's About Time!

I have this solitare game that I rediscovered on my computer when we were having trouble with our internet connection. I have a few games I like on there and enjoy spending an hour or two clicking around and trying different games. I ran across this new game called "General's Patience." It is a two deck game and the game says it is really hard with a very low chance of winning. I've been playing it for months now and haven't won a single game. I kept thinking, "just one more" and have been positively addicted to this stupid game. I just had to win one. Well, this morning, while I was waiting for the freezing fog to clear up, I finally, FINALLY won a game. Out of 1017 games I won one. One measly game.

Stupid solitare game. I should delete it off my computer. I would sure get a lot more done around the house.

Summoned

I made the mistake of getting the mail today. I got a summons for jury service. Stop laughing, Leah. I know I made fun of you for getting called...guess that came back to bite me on the butt, didn't it?

Not only have I been summoned for jury service, I was summoned for FEDERAL jury service. If I get picked for a jury I have to go to TACOMA (136 miles away according to Google maps). Ta-friggin-coma. I can't just do Clark County jury service and drive 10 miles to downtown Vancouver. Oh nooooooo. Has to be the outskirts of Seattle. Sheesh.

Here are some of the great things I can look forward to if I get called to serve on a Federal trial...

48.5 cents per mile
$40 per day attendance fee (which I will turn over to the city so I can get my regular salary)
$167 for hotel & food.
Any public transportation, parking, or toll fees.

Well, it is my "fundamental obligation we all share as citizens of the Untied States" to serve, so I'll just do it. I really won't mind too much. It will be a good experience.

And just last night I was wishing something interesting would happen. Be careful what you wish for!

Going to the Movies

I've been meaning to write this post for a while and just haven't done it. I don't go to the movie theater to see a movie very often. Greg hates theaters, so we usually wait until movies come out on DVD and get them through Netflix.

The last week in December, Michele & Ritha invited me to go see National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Since I think the original National Treasure is the ultimate letterboxing movie EVER, I was pleased to go see the second one.

I obviously haven't been to the movie theater in a really, really long time. First of all, I found out you can buy your movie tickets on line (for $1 surcharge). After I picked myself up off the floor that I paid $10.25 to see ONE movie, I was really excited. I don't even remember the last movie I saw in the theater, but there is a good chance it was the first National Treasure. Or Day After Tomorrow.

Then I got to the theater and decided I'd better have the full movie experience and bought a medium coke and a small popcorn. How on earth can these theaters justify charging FOUR DOLLARS for a medium coke? Come on! I can get 4 two-liter bottles at Safeway for that! And the small popcorn (which was 85 oz according to my receipt) was $4.75! WHAT? $8.75 for snacks? Am I crazy? Or just really cheap.

So I paid $19.00 to go to one movie with a medium coke and a small popcorn. For one person. I guess the days of a movie being a cheap date are gone. And how does a family manage it?

Yes, I have movie theater sticker shock that has lasted almost a month. I totally enjoyed the movie, which I'd like to see again, but am still rather hung up on how expensive it is to go to the theater.

I don't know, all of you that go to the movies more often than me, what do you think? Are movies way too expensive?

A Funny

To all my friends who sent me best wishes in 2007, or promises of good luck if I forwarded something, it did NOT WORK. For 2008, could you please just send either money, chocolate or gas vouchers.

Thank you!

Auntie Em! Auntie Em!

Wow. Big excitement in the ole Vancouver area today. We had a tornado touch down. The news stations are beside themselves with glee. There is nothing Portland newscasters love more than bad weather. A couple of trees were uprooted, a roof or two blew off and a building was "devestated" on Vancouver Lake, but you'd think the whole city was in shambles from the way they talked incessantly about it on the news (which was extended to an hour and a half in order for EVERYONE and their dog & cat to be interviewed and tell their horrific story about escaping the HORRIBLE TORNADO!).

So it was really not much of a big deal. Just to give you out of town readers a perspective on how close we were to total anhailation, here is a map of where I live in relation to where the tornado hit.

Not too close. The National Weather Service thinks this is about a 0 to a 1 on the F-scale. I don't think this area will be forever known as the next tornado alley. Still, it does give me a blog topic.

We did get a really good storm that included heavy rain and tons of hail that lasted about five minutes. Will the excitement never end?

Organizing the House

So Greg & I decided it's time to get organized and look like we actually live in this house. We went to IKEA last weekend. Oh. My. God. I want to chuck everything out of my house and start over. That place is SO COOL! Now we just have to decided what the heck we want and how to pay for it and we'll be all set.

Sounds easy, doesn't it? I have a feeling I should put it on my resolution list, because I bet you $50 that this time next year we won't have done anything towards that goal.

But the cinnamin rolls were good.

Happy 2008

Hey there everyone! I know, I know you are all shocked to see a new post. I haven't been posting on my blog much lately. Sorry about that. I've been...well, I’ve been not posting much to my blog. I haven’t been especially busy or anything interesting, I just haven’t had a lot to say. I have given you a few picture posts, just to let you know I’m alive and all, but I don’t think they’ve been very satisfying.

So here we are, one week in to 2008. Woo-hoo. It’s a new year and we have to do all that resolution crap. But before we get to that, let’s recap 2007.

December
Wild weather hits the Pacific Northwest.
Largest Sitka Spruce in the World blows down.
I survive the holidays.

Hmm. Looking back this doesn’t look like one of my better years, does it? And these are the highlights! Well, except for all the plays I went to this year. Those were pretty awesome. I didn’t put in the lowlights. Sheesh. Here’s hoping 2008 will be GREAT! (Oh, doesn’t that just make you want to barf?)

Okay, so here is the round up on my resolutions from 2007:
1. Read 125 books
Hey! I made this one. I ended up reading 136 books.

Favorite book of the year? Death from the Woods by Brigitte Aubert. Oh, and Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, of course. That so goes without saying that I almost didn’t say it.

2. Listen to 125 books on tape
Close but no cigar. I ended up listening to 102 books on tape. Still that makes 238 books overall for the year so I’m not going to snivel about that.

Favorite audio book author of the year? Dick Francis. I have so enjoyed listening to his books on tape. Oh, and J.K. Rowling, of course. That so goes without saying that I almost didn’t say it.

3. Find 250 letterboxes
I found 148. But I broke my ankle and didn’t letterbox for 4 months! Give me a break!

Favorite letterbox of the year? Tim’s Prize. This is a mystery box whose clue I solved a couple of years ago. It was a very, very hard clue that I labored over for weeks. Why I didn’t just put the clue into Google and get help solving it (‘cause it would be pretty easy to do it that way now), I’ll never know, but I solved it the long way around. I found the box totally by accident when we were doing the Rat Race. It just tickles my funny bone that I worked so darned hard to solve that stupid clue and then I literally stumbled on the box when I wasn’t even looking for it.

4. Get back to Flying
Uh, no. Didn’t do diddly on this goal besides tell myself I needed to get to it.

5. Finish some open craft projects
Also a miserable failure. In fact, I learned to knit and have been starting more projects that I probably won’t finish. Go me!

I can hear you asking what my resolutions are for 2008. Yes, I’m sure you are all waiting with bated breath for me to share my resolutions with you before you share yours. I don’t know why I continually make resolutions when I never manage to keep them, but I did. So here they are (in no particular order):

1. Read 125 books
2. Listen to 100 audio books
3. Find 150 letterboxes
4. Start Flying again!
5. Finish 2 open craft projects (like the scarf I am working on and the hat I have half completed). That’s one every six months. I ought to be able to manage THAT much, don’t you think?
6. Stop coming to work looking like I rolled out of bed (i.e. put on some make up and do your hair, lazy girl!)
7. Really, REALLY need to start eating better. (After I go have some pie. Okay, just kidding). Translate this to bring your lunch to work and stop eating at McDonalds so much.
8. Finish the damned floors.
9. Make the money problems go away. (Maybe I’ll set up a PayPal account for donations?)
10. Organize the family room, craft room and office.

There. Those are nice specific-ish goals, don’t you think?

So this has been a long, hopefully not too boring, post. I think I’ll end it here. Oh, and by the way. All of my faithful readers have to add “Comment on Kris’s Blog More” as one of your resolutions.
